Featured Coast G uard Beacon Age ?

Does the '48' indicate 1948 ? Stands 22" tall, made of an alloy painted gold, not brass. Heavy with think glass.

 

Pretty certain that 1948 was the year it was put into use or at least tested and maybe officially used a little later.
The glass fresnel lens and metal bird spike were replaced in 1968 by an all in one molded acrylic lens/bird spike, like this.

Actually found the replacement date was a little earlier than I thought, 1966.
