Help with old family portraits

Hi, can anyone help me describe what this type of family portrait/large pictures is called? The images seems to be on a cardboard type material. Measures 21 3/4 inches long and 15 1/2 inches across. I have more like this so I would love to learn all I can about old photography and old pictures. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

At that size, it may be a solar enlargement. There have been other examples discussed on the forums, mostly in the "Ephemera and Photographs" category.

I quite often see them in secondhand shops in neighbourhoods where many Italians lived that immigrated into Switzerland.
in Italy on the countryside you often find them in small hotels over the beds looking down on you (no hanky-panky please !), but the young ones don't want them anymore because they didn't know the people shown .

 

I refer to them as domed oval frames. To reiterate what Fid said that people didn't know them. I can't count the times I've been to auction to see beautiful frames as yours of family portraits piled on the back of a trailer simply because the family had no idea who they were. Sad.....Any provenance you can add to the back of a photograph, no matter how old the photo is pertinent to the next generation.....Names/dates/city/etc.
