THANKS to @Ownedbybear and others for the info on the jade brooch. I listed in on eBay for $128.95 (I paid $5) and it sold in less than 2 minutes!!!! Did I undersell? I'm certainly not complaining...just looking for guidance for next time :)

Search 314100450056 under eBay completed items.

I remember the thread when you asked about this, and I was thinking, wow... I've never seen anything like that stunning brooch. But where would you find replacement jade just the right size and color?

Can't help with the value as I don't really know jade. But agree with Kyra, if you told me later it sold for $128, I would have thought not a bad price with the damage. And an excellent return on your $5!

    Here's the link, Krya.

vitaly-le-francois: May I ask: how did you arrive at the $128.95 price?
I'll certainly understand if you don't respond.

when I have an item I’m not sure of I like to do an auction rather than fixed price. Let the market determine its value. I’ll start high. Like for example if I thought $128 was a good price I’d maybe start at $100 or $110 or something. That way if it sells at opening bid I didn’t lose much off my valuation but if the market wants it I’ll get more than my valuation. You can always relist if no sale and list at fixed price wherever you want. Jade is so tricky. There’s so much to know about it and any piece that grabs the right collectors eye, particularly a Chinese buyers eye could bring big money. Stones in general in China seem to be that way. Take two stones that look relatively similar to a western eye and one could be worth $50 and one could be worth $5,000 to a Chinese buyer based on what would seem to be relatively small differences. Anyways when I’m not sure I like to do auction format and let the market decide for me. Of course starting auctions with high opening bids you can debate the validity of but I don’t have a strong enough following to feel confident starting super low on valuable items.

@wlwhittier Good question! I did some research on eBay and found similar pieces (all sold examples, btw) that were higher and some were lower. I felt the amount was a good happy point for me.

J Dagger, I do the same thing with items I'm unsure of. I agree, starting auctions at a high price I think is a turnoff for bidders, but I do like to give the market a try for things I feel might have an upside.
Often if it doesn't sell, I just relist it as a BIN at the same price. Sometimes it will get purchased very quickly upon relist as a BIN.
