Featured Talani cameo locket

This cameo locket recently sold at auction. It is signed by Teresa Talani, using Greek letters. I wish I had gotten a hold of this one! Drats!

 

Well, I immediately thought of the medallion on the back of some 'Danbiere' faux marbre plaques:

 

Thought this piece looked familiar. It was sold earlier this year for 2000 GBP:

That auctioneer thought the signature was 'indistinct', when it could hardly be much clearer.

My Talani Leda seems to be a copy of one of the several Ledas designed by Giovanni Pichler. This may have been drawn from another of his works:

The Pichler has a butterfly (an allusion to Psyche) on the wreath I do not see on the Talani. She seems to have chosen to use a stone with a very shallow white layer, having to cut down into the brown in places.

If the cameo was cracked in January, it didn't show & wasn't mentioned:



The metal impression on the other side is the much reproduced head of young Hercules attributed to Gnaios.

 

Thank you, Bronwen! The locket sold for 550 GBP yesterday on Catawiki. The crack was not mentioned in the more recent listing either. I wonder if it was damaged since January?

 

You have a keen cameo mind.

 

Apparently, there was a reserve of GBP 4995 on the locket. So no sale after all. Quote a stiff price when the sellers didn't put much info into the description.
