Featured M. Van Elliott portrait

  1. This painting has been in my family since before I was born and I can’t find anything online about this artist as well as the portrait . The artist signature is painted in red and says “M. Van Elliott” on the bottom left corner of the canvas. Im not 100% sure that is exactly what it says due to the cursive-like nature. It also has written “Paris 48” just above the name on the bottom left corner as well. Any information would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance for all the help!

FYI: The image below of the artists signature has been edited in order to to see detail.

  2. Here is another version of the signature with selected hue saturation for better legibility. 276AFD1A-0C45-4C7B-B7FC-87D5382BD5FD.jpeg

    Nice quality.
Not sure the signature is Van Elliott. I do read Elliott, but the Van bit looks a bit more elaborate. And the combination of Dutch 'van' with non-Dutch 'Elliott' seems strange.

He appears jovial! There are a large number of Van Elliotts on Facebook so that is possible

It also might be Von Elliot.

Van could be a middle name used as a first, when the first isn't something manly like Marion. (That's what the actor Emmett Heflin did when he shortened his middle name Evan to Van and the rest is film history.) Does appear to be a capital V. But... to my eye, doesn't look quite right for Van.

The Eliot Clan society has the following old poem to address the spelling and source of the name:

The double L and single T
    Descent from Minto and Wolflee,
The double T and single L
Mark the old race in Stobs that dwell.
The single L and single T
The Eliots of St Germains be,
But double T and double L,
Who they are nobody can tell.

    Joel,

I have a theory as to who your artist is. I believe that the painting was done by Martha Beggs Elliott. Martha V Beggs married Vann S Elliott, they lived in Alabama. She studied portrait painting and at one point studied in Paris. I think it is possible that the signature is a hybridized Mrs. Vann Elliott. I was able to find a reference in Davenports Art Reference Guide and an example of her work. In most cases where I find artists with similar names in the same city I tend to assume they are relatives, in this case I think the same person. There is another example in the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, the image is protected and could not be copied. It is signed in a similar fashion to yours. I hope this helps.

I have to say, that handsome young man in the uniform looks a bit like our OP Joel.

Of all the paintings of hers I've seen on line today, I definitely like the one on this thread the best.
