    Hi all:)
This mystery box appealed me (I collect insect jewellery:joyful:).
Just bought it, so it isn't in my hands yet.
Seems old, the crazing and general condition are consistant for it being older than modern/vintage;)

    diameter: 12cm or 4.5/8"

    height: 7cm or 2.3/4"

The seller's pics are clear enough to show the material, white ceramic, with thick vitreous enamel and metallic wires included in the decor.
The whole thing looking as an usual cloisonné on metal, but no metal here, except the wires:bucktooth:
Never seen anything like this, and I can't find any other examples when googling for cloisonné on ceramic!

Any idea of what I have here?

This is Japanese, Meiji period, and called "Totai Shippo". The Japanese experimented with cloisonne on porcelain and earthenware but gave up producing such pieces soon...

kyratango, this one is a keeper! I would not let go of it. Chinese cloisonné is ***never*** mixed with porcelain (at least, during my almost 40 years in China I never saw anything other than metal.) Nice piece!

Aww, thank you @Mat for the information!!!
I'll search for Totai Shippo to learn more:peeking:

Ha! I knew this was something special:woot:
Never seen a cloisonné that wasn't on metal base!
    For sure, I'll keep it, as I'm not a seller:happy:, rather a hoarder/collector:facepalm:
Do you agree with a slight cleaning of the enamel (not the pottery)?

I'd use a Sunshine cloth on it.

Indeed, Japanese cloisonne on earthenware. If not wrong, they did it for a short period of time, 1880-90’s.

I see no reason it cannot be washed with a mild detergent and water.

Cloisonne is an enamel, usually with brass wires that has been baked.
    Pottery has also been baked.
Both should easily withstand a wash.

    Mild water temperature, not hot.

Totally agree it can be washed, but the Sunshine cloth will take the tarnish and crud off the metal very nicely.

For the cleaning, my goal is only to remove the grime on the enamel, and the patina of the brass wires, but leave the old look on the base:happy:
    Thanks all for your suggestions:kiss:

I am assuming you found it on-line. So how did the seller describe it in her title & description?

We will definitely want to see the before & after phots once it is in your hands.:happy:

BTW I may have missed it. but what ever happened with the damaged fans you received?

It was described as cloisonné on ceramic casket, price reduced to 18€, so... grasped the butterflies:)

Happily, the destroyed fans were fully refunded by Paypal, I took apart carefully the double sided panels and put them flat between two card boards, they are totally falling apart.
To try a repair I'd have to separate the two sheets, glue as a puzzle the parts on a support and would'nt be able to tense them back on the frames, plus they are very dark in real life and beyond any cleaning...
The only usable parts are the frames, I can hang them on a wall, framing something:D

I would like to think I would have jumped on it also just because it is so unusual. Excellent find!!

I am glad to hear you at the very least refunded totally. It is ultimately very sad that something that survived so many years was done in by an total idiot though.

Wonder if it is the right size for a powder box.

While looking through a Christie's site for something else, I happened on this.
They say it is a seal paste wax box.
