Featured Japanese Kimono

Dear all, I seriously need your help here; This kimono was bought by my dad on one of his many business travels to Japan, in late 1960's early 70's (i belive) and have as such been with the family ever since. He always said that it was a special bridal kimono, which he could not resist buying, even if "very expensive" - not that i believe that he broke the bank buying it.

However, he is now sadly no longer with me, and this is an item that will have to go- it is to large to fit in any "normal" Norwegian home, even though it is a very nice piece to hang, even from just a design perspective. I have measured it to be around 185 cm in lenght, 119 cm wide, including arms, as photographed. All needlework seem to be done in silk, but again, i am no expert here.

It is in good condition, just a minor hole (see photo) and could maybe use a bit of cleaning, as it have been hanged and not cleaned since he bought it (now it is a bit curly after being in a box for a few weeks.

Is there anyone here that can tell me some more about it, if it is a special kimono, and where should i best go to sell it? Ebay? I see many here are careful with price assessment, something i have great respect for - but here i really have no clue what to do and what to ask for!

Dear Pat, thanks- and yes, ebay is an alternative. Would just be great to know some more about it first, not that it really matters, it need to have a better home than i can provide, so it has to go!

 

I'm the same way, Torkel. I don't like listing things on eBay unless I feel like I know what I'm doing with it. Of course, too often that means I avoid listing the best things I have to sell.

Are there any auction houses or museums near you that specialize in Asian items?

 

None at all- this is not a very popular area here in Norway. And we are the same, but this time i will make an exception, and list it, even do it auction based. The size is huge, and it really needs a good home sooner rather than later, so i just have to trust that someone will find it attractive, either for their own collection or re-selling. The main thing is that someone takes care of it!

 

Other members will probably post later with ideas about selling the kimono.

Whatever you do, my hunch is it will do very well.

Hi,
I had a Japanese friend who had a gorgeous one. It was insured for over 10 grand. When she moved to California the moving company kept it in the cab of the trailer instead of the back. The two drivers took turns driving so it was never out of sight.

Sorry, i was down with a flu- but i am amazed that this looks just like mine! And i put it on Ebay for USD 200 lowest price, but no response, which just goes to show that sometimes you may have a beautiful item, but no interest!

 

He he- i am a realistic guy! So do not worry! And anyway, money is not all.. good to have, yes, but not the ruler - at least not for me.
