Put a low bid on an Ebay auction and got this for what I'm sure is a great price. The silver top is marked for William Hutton and Sons Ltd. - Birmingham with a year letter for 1901. I've never seen glass quite like this before. The glass is unmarked - assuming it's an English maker - but this is an area i know little about. Idea on the glass? Also - the silver spout is in rough shape - and no stopper. Worth getting the silver repaired? About 8" tall - holds about 1 quart? Maybe slightly less. Thanks for looking!

Stourbridge made and lovely quality. I'd be looking at Webb or Walsh Walsh. If I can unearth my copy of Hajdamach, I'll see if there's anything similar.

Great find. Re the possibility of a stopper, that groove in the top makes me wonder if it might it have had instead, a metal lid which one pushed down on the bit at the back to open? [You can tell I'm technical-term challenged here :( ].

That's a possibility - although I can't think of a term for it either. I think I'd need to find another example of a top like this to know for sure what/if anything went in the top. I appreciate your thoughts!

Something like a thumb tab lid?

Beautiful piece Arroncab:) at first I thought it would have a top like ALittleBit & SBSVC mention, but looking at the opening I'm not sure - is there a lip/flat rim around the opening? I'm thinking a stopper if there is:)
no matter though, it is stunning the way it is and will look even better when you polish the silver, lol

Working on the polishing now ...really bad tarnish. I need Nate or Greg to do this for me! There is an indentation/rim...I do think it had something there...

Found a number inscribed on the glass inside the top - I'm guessing to indicate the matching stopper...

Before reading anything my first thought was Loetz.
I had one of these (Different type glass) the metal was marked "Made in England". So I assumed the glass was as well. Later discovered the glass was Loetz and only the metal was English. Too late, had sold it for too little.

I was going to say that yes it had a lid of some kind. Now that you have found the number, you know it had some sort of stopper.

I think it is a whiskey jug. A claret jug would have a wider base and narrow top.
    Opinions only.

Stevens Williams glass is a possible English maker.
