    hey folks

found this watercolour today. i read the signature as henry aiken, when researching it i found alot of results for a henry alkin, who was a caricaturist artist from way back

but that would have to make this painting date from 1824

i havent taken it apart yet cause i cant be bothered:)

is that even a possibility ?

why there is a big modern looking stamp taped on the back i do not know !!

    any thoughts appreciated

No but I think 1924 is reasonable.

I would think an amateur influenced by Japanese woodcuts. Has it's charm.

Thanks Deborah, yeah I think 1824 would be a stretch !, I agree on a amateur as well

Might be an amateur, but there's a restraint that shows they had an understanding of the medium. Not some weekend hack, in other words.

Looks like a Jack Russell I had. They weren’t a standardized breed until fairly recently so there’s a lot of variety.

Thanks Shwikman, that's really helpful actually, I was wondering

Having a breed name can be as usefull as having the artists name

A quick look at familysearch doesn't find many likely candidates - for 1924 the only likely candidates seem to be Henry Seffrien Alken (b.1865), a clergyman, or his son Henry Wilfrid Seffrien Alken (b.1901). Almost certainly related to the early 19th century artists, as Seffrien" seem to be a name used in the family.

Jivvy the research is my favorite

When I looked (at Aiken, I don't think Riken is correct), I quickly decided there were far too many of them to find the right guy. :bucktooth::p
