A very rare item in my collection. This is a full original December, 1949 issue of Glamorous Models Magazine that features a 5-page photo spread of a young Marilyn/Norma Jeane by photographer Andre de Dienes. This issue is in pretty mint condition for it’s 70 year age, which many know is a very hard condition to find for many/any publication of this era. Here are a few images I was able to get uploaded.

Lovely shots of Marilyn, who is on the cover of this one?

Thank You The lady on the cover is New York model/actress Mary Collins, a fast rising star in the modelling world at the time. She was about 19 years old when this cover was shot.

Thank you! I remember those small waistlines of the times! :cat:

Interesting that in Marilyn's modeling poses, she is on her toes in each one! :joyful:

Actually, MM's legs were not all that attractive - but when the toes are pointed the calf muscles "pull" in all the right directions.............thus why most legs wearing high heels are more attractive than those wearing flats.

I know this trivia because my mother had the most attractive legs and did a little (print) modeling for hosiery and I remember that her agent said that it did not matter what Ma was wearing on her feet, it didn't change her legs. Ma also (print) modeled rings and bracelets for Tiffany.

Not sure if its a bikini, could just be a sweater over a maillot, just a very skimpy one - yeah probably European.

If this is of any help, here are a couple of other samples from the magazine that shows the cut of bathing suits, one being the cover girl & her suit. As per what has been commented, these most certainly are Euro designs of the era. Hope this is a little bit helpful with the discussion, Cheers!

hi VM, found a few framed photographs myself today, they have all been checked with a loop and look to be real photographs

the glass to the frames was covered in marks and grime, so they might have a bit of age

1 definite marilyn, 1 possible marilyn, 1 bruce lee, 1 James dean

    any thoughts appreciated

    Hi Charlie,

Well what I usually look at when determining a true vintage photo.

    1. Look for a photographer stamp or studio stamp on reverse

    2. The type of photo paper, different eras have different types of course. In this case during say the 1950's a gloss double weight paper was common. Similar to papers today, but discernable from the modern paper through age, creasing if any.

    3. Sometimes in vintage a time age "silvering" may occur. Although more common in photos pre-1950, silvering is when the dark areas of the photo appear to turn silverish because of the silver gelatin used in photo paper, you can see this when holding photo 180 degrees in light. remember this occurs if it is an aging photo. During the1950's and beyond you may see less of this bscause a coating was added to circumvent this.

    4. The owner can positively confirm it's vintage through documentation, although i don't usually trust this entirely.

Those are just a few points, if I can think of more I will absolutely inform you, or if others in the forum have info.

If those dont have some of that criteria, they could posdibly be photos produced of those eras, or later reproductions. I am out at the moment, but will certainly take a closer look at your photos when I get in. I hope I am of some help?

    A brilliant help

I'll get them out of the frames and have a good look with the info you've given me

    Thanks

You’re very welcome. As said in my long explanation, my wording may not be exact as I wrote a few of them off the top of my head and on the go, so I hope that helps a little with your assessment of the early photos in particular. Cheers! Vintage Maven

And as said earlier Charlie, pls try not to place a lot of emphasis on the silvering I mentioned. For example my 1929 Betty Grable does that because of the era and development & paper technology of the time. I have 1940’s & 50’s gloss and matte originals that show no signs of that type of deterioration. Yet I have a photo that does show that from 1942 and another from 1918 that shows very little sign of that. I think how an image was stored plays a big part of condition of course. Anyways I’ve rambled too much, less words are sometimes better lol
