I picked these two up yesterday. I chose two randomly from a group of maybe 15.
They measure 21 5/8" by 18". Both are marked RELEASED If published credit must be given as follows "Official Photograph U.S. Navy"

I need help with everything from information about Navy cardboard photos this size, to the locations shown in the photos, to how to get the warps out of the cardboard.

They do look like press photos but the size is a bit unexpected.

I'm thinking they're for an After-Action Briefing, so a seated group could more easily view them...bicbw

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

1st one is not a deepwater port......... more like a fishing port at low tide.....but built up enuf to contain war materials , like oil...........so a military target.

Depending on the cardboard material an' its thickness, a good frame shop has resources to address wrinkle in photos an' their substrate. Mine uses steam I believe, as well as a vacuum frame...but I'm sure there are other effective processes. One of them could be separation of photo from its backing, depending on adhesive used, age, an' other troublesome factors. Most of the time, in my limited experience, they don't come apart without moderate to severe damage to the photo.

Likely what's burning at about the center of the photo.

That would be my conclusion too. The Japanese set up a diesel dump in a fishing village and a Navy plane got a hit on it. A lot of fighters didn't want to land with ammo on board, either Army Air Corps or Navy, and used it on targets of opportunity just in case. A small gasoline/diesel site would have been just the ticket.

wlwhittier - thanks for the tips. A lot of sites online seem to think I can just iron it with a stem iron....which doesn't sound like such a great idea.

Wow - cxgirl! You found it thanks!

You may not be able to tell from my pictures, but these are not glossy photos glued to cardboard. The photos are printed directly onto the top layer of cardboard.
