That would also have been my guess (but wait for more knowledgeable members) Why the guitar/ukulele like shape?

(I think this is the right person to tag for needle arts...? Forgive me if I'm wrong.)

    Peonies and butterflies. Certainly Chinese.

If it is the right size, it could have been made to cover a violin; goes on top, inside the case to provide additional protection from scratches and such. Older cases were not as well-padded as today's. I've seen them hand-sewn from various materials.

    Hi @Kaiserpoo ,
Sorry everyone, I was on vaca!!

Gosh, you have me on that one! I have no idea of the origin... it looks woven and I would think age wise, some where around the Turn-of-the-Century to 1920ish. Yes, something pretty to lay a uke or violin on... perhaps it laid on a table or on a piano in a parlor?

    Pretty little piece!

I think I found the use. It was a top soft cover placed in the violin case.

Yes. Older violin cases were often quite loose. My first violin came in a case circa 1920, with a hand-sewn insert or top cover, made from blue flannel. And I just bought a new case for an old violin; and though recently manufactured, and very tight around the sides, the top of the violin was still unprotected...and since bows are stored in the lid, if a bow happened to come loose it would be bouncing around on the top of the violin. The case came with a matching top-cover for the violin...and shaped just like OP's item.
