Featured Help with Civil war photo

    I've had these for some time but have never actually figured out what time period these gentlemen are from. ? Civil war or later. One is an officer but not sure of the other ? cadet. Appreciate any wisdom you may offer. Thank you IMG_1145.JPG IMG_1148.JPG

    The first appears to be an ambrotype, and the second looks like a tintype. The cases they are mounted in are both early 1860s in style. I am not familiar enough with the uniforms to be real specific, but they both appear to be civil war era.

    Any other ideas on what the uniforms are, especially the second one. Could this be confederate

    I don't know about the uniform, but am curious about his left (on our right) upper arm. Is that someone else's hand holding on? And what about the 'paper?' next to his elbow?

    He does look a like a private (in rank) but without color it's hard to tell which side/ Can you get a closer look at the badge on his kepi?

    No badge that I can see...just a buckle on the strap..that is why I was wondering about cadet of some sort
