The mammoth ivory I use/have is more greyish and severely "checked" so I doubt this is made from that. I think I see the lines on the back view...

Your painting is not an amateur work and dates from the third quarter of the 19thc IMO. The frame, (silver-gilt type) is also a late 19thc frame....
