The frame reads older to me,it could havebeen re-matted in the 80s. Lovely little thing,Id find room for it somewhere on my GROANING walls !
I think 1900 would be about right for the time frame. Unfortunately "brown" furniture isnt worth a lot these days. Wich is a shame as its SO much...

1870s-1880s would be my guess. I would reupholster it and enjoy it,they dont sell for much these days.
I think something to do with the nose may be correct. Maybe they put mentholated water or the like in it and you inhaled?
