Good idea. I do think it would have slots on the side edge for the pipe stem to rest in, if it was intended as a pipe ashtray.

This is 6 1/2 inches square, heavy for its size at almost 5 pounds. Has a 60s 70s vibe to me, especially with that color. Google image search...
