That's what I'd do. It's safer than glue and easily reversed. And no springs to eat the cameo like plate holders do porcelain or pottery.

Ventian would be my first guess too. That gilded, raised decoration points toward Italy.
They might be lab created spinel - just went looking and found some lab stones that are dead on. They probably wouldn't use a stone that high...

These are easy - side seams = plastic. Those darker ones might be something else, but I wouldn't put money on it.
