How grey is the glass?
The ones I’ve seen here were plated brass, but yours look better. I think it’s worth getting them checked, you may have got lucky.
It’s very silly. He made a rather terrible tv commercial some years back which somehow involved Tuareg camp fires. It’s stuck in my brain!

If they’re cast iron, then yes, they can get brittle in extreme cold. I remember studying how Abraham Darby researched that.
