I had a quick look online and found a classified ad by the Boston Bronze co., looking for "canvassers" in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle dated march...
@spartcom5 paid $4.00 for them so for sure they are worth at least $4.00, right? I'd even have considered them if they cost a bit more - maybe...
With that base I'm thinking the orient (China) ...but you never know, it might be from somewhere in the west too ..

If it isn't COMPLETELY dried out you can safely remove it intact without resorting to scraping tearing or otherwise butchering it by repeatedly...
