Looks like all 4 stones are damaged,the burnishing around the stones is bad. The texture of the ring was probably made by hammering the metal...
A "True artisan" probably would not have set broken stones or possibly broke the stones while setting them.

You didn't see the other 4 marks?
The marks may be Egyptian.
The pattern was hand engraved.
