Japanese damascene is also done on shakudo(copper and gold) alloy which is not magnetic.The only pieces I have seen in the states made on shakudo...

If the sphere is against a piece of paper with letters,it won't invert.It will invert with distance.
Any clear sphere will invert an image since it is just a lens.A clear glass marble will invert the image.
