I think horn. Notice how the butt end has drawn material from the metal. Since horn is made of growth layers wicking would be natural.

Observation: Upper lid? is made of mahogany and bottom appears to be made of pine (two sets joined?). Closing the lid would cause the components...

Probably having a problem with 1MB max. size issue. I understand the problem, server capacity, however, many do not know how to downsize their photos.
An extreme closeup of the signature would be helpful.
I cannot help, however, sizes and photo of bottom may help others.
