    I think they are incense burners. Youd put a charcoal tablet or candle in the cutout Im guessing.

    How old is this settee?

    I think early 1900s too, Book,it could have had the springs added at a later date. It does look like its been refinished though.

    Take the velvet off(soaking in warm water should do it) and see if its marked. If its a "name" it could have some value,but it already does have...
