Robert Corbett, a logging and lumbering entrepreneur who was a strong influence on the city in its early years, renamed it Corbett, then Warner in 1891, and then Ladysmith on July 1, 1900, after the bride of Charles R. Smith, head of the Menasha Wooden Ware Co. (source Wikipedia) The railroad gave the area the name Warner. I have no idea why. The village of Warner was named Ladysmith in 1900 in honor of the bride of Charles R. Smith, head of the Menasha Woodenware Co., who had been recently married. Mrs. Smith never honored her namesake with a visit. The name became official on July 1, 1900 when the Federal Postal Department approved the change. (source Rusk County Historical Society) The story goes: Smith bought out Corbett and loved the area and wanted to move his family there, so named the town for his wife. She had other ideas and refused to even visit. When I was a child there was a big push to once again change the name back to Flambeau Falls but nobody could ever agree and the idea was eventually dropped.[/QUOTE]
