16th or 20th Century painting?

Hi everyone ,

I picked up this painting as a gamble...

Is it new or old.... ?

The back is chipboard and there is written on it: 1968

Is it some kind of old painting later attached on chipboard or is it from the sixties and been made old....

Sure to be the rape of a Sabine. Might be inspired by a classical work but certainly modern in execution.

It's nicely painted.....but that violence is too much for me....

I would burn it !

 

Take it out of the frame and look at the edges, maybe post a pic of the edge? That would tell us if it is indeed painted directly on the board or if it is painted on something else and laid down on the back board.

 

Or maybe the abduction/rape of Persephone?

 

Hum. Could be. The male figure doesn't have any of the attributes of Hades though.

The varnish is either quite new or very durable. I think it is no more than a few decades old. 60s at most.

@komokwa : I know what you mean. Thats the same reason the seller wanted to get rid of it...

@blooey : I rook it out of the frame but am not any smarter... It looks like a thin wooden plate (1- 2 mm) is glued to the chipboard...

I think the thin panel is just part of the chipboard. Can't tell if the painting is directly on the panel or if there is something attached on it. If so, it must be very thin like paper or something and been using lots of glue and varnish...

I think it will be just something from the sixties and directly painted on the chipboard or other furniture panel....

 

Could it be a print decoupaged on to a piece of chipboard?

 

Persephone is grabbed while out picking flowers with some of her maidens. The flowers on her person & the girls in the background indicate just which rape this is.

OP is a bit more like the Sabine episode, except it's so private. The attempted abduction of the Sabine women involves 2 groups of men fighting over the women.



The wall & dome in the background suggest a Middle East setting. Can anyone think of a Biblical story that would fit? Thousand and One Nights? Don't think it is a copy of anything pre-1900; otherwise the lady's scarf would not have draped in a way leaving her so exposed.
