Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Looks like the Clayton in the newspaper was in South Dakota, and it's only 15 miles from Bridgewater, where Joe Hofer was living. Sooooo.... I wonder if that is the reference on the baseball uniforms.

Although the postcard writer was writing from St. Paul, and refers to a "World Series" that was just played, I wonder if the photo was actually depicting a team from South Dakota? Because he refers to Joe having fun in the photo ... and the first line says "here we are...".

New theory... this is a photo that includes both Joe Hofer and the postcard writer dressed for a game in South Dakota. And the 1000% that is printed on the card refers to the Clayton team, not to the World Series referred to on the back.

Of course, this could be incorrect. Anybody investigating whether Concordia has or had a dorm named Clayton?

    Hi Bev,
Are you NUTS, your town is missing ICE after this winter????? Seriously our town always had an ice cream social and it was really special when it was held during the strawberry festival. The social was late June, usually the strawberry festival was usually early June unless a nasty late spring slowed the growth.

I went looking for a Clayton Hall earlier and did not see one, Fig.

On the other hand I believe I have found "Tobias." Tobias Buchner, born about 1896 in South Dakota, was living with his widowed mother and several siblings in Clayton, Hutchinson, SD in 1910.

In 1920 our Tobias is found working as a school teacher in Mercer County, SD and is living with a clergyman's family as a boarder.

Given how much Concordia has grown and changed in the past 99 years, it would not surprise me that any dormitory that existed then is long gone now anyway.

I think you are correct, Bakers... I had not noticed that he said they lost some games, so they couldn't be 1000%

He gave stats for Brooklyn - I don't think that (Clayton) necessarily had anything to do with that, right?

As a city in Minnesota, Clayton Screenshot 2015-04-12 14.57.51.png never made it... they had a PO till 1899 then did a fade.

Maybe just offer it at a low opening bid, and see what happens, although it seems too obscure to attract many aficionados.

This is funny, though... from the google book "Clayton" (North Carolina) Tobias is not on it. ha!ha!

Scout - Let me try this one a different way

Tobias is talking about a set of "world series" games that he and a group of other students at Concordia held in 1916 to play "as if" their two teams were the two actual professional teams playing in the 1916 World Series between The Boston Red Sox and The Brooklyn Robins. Tobias played on the team that was "representing" Brooklyn.

Tobias lived in Clayton, South Dakota when growing up and playing baseball there with Joe (to whom he is writing and who apparently is part of the group in the picture,) He has mixed memories of his time playing ball with Joe and the stats of the "World Series" games he had just played in St. Paul at school.

Real photo postcards were not only made by a local photographer from pictures he himself had taken. Anyone could bring a picture in to be printed on the postcard stock. And it appears from what we have pieced together, that this is what happened here. Tobias took in a picture of his old Clayton team, had it printed and then wrote his message to Joe.

It certainly seemed at first glance that the picture was of the team he talked about playing the "world series" with. But since, as you've pointed out, the Clayton in Minnesota was not connected with Concordia (or even in existence perhaps in 1916) we had to see what connected Joe and Tobias to "Clayton." That newspaper page linked above did the trick, even though a bit by accident.

    I hope that helped. :)

What a mashup - Concordia/Clayton SD/Clayton MN, World Series/Brooklyn, Stats and all - Tobias threw everything PLUS the kitchen sink in there!

Love the info about Tobias Buchner, really thanks bakersgma and everyone. Doesn't make this particularly valuable, but fun anyway!

This may be beside the point because I think you know... but just for the record, the photos of a baseball team in Clayton, North Carolina don't have anything to do with anything happening in Clayton, South Dakota.

    Bakersgma, great summary!
