Most if not all universities have a lettermen's club. These clubs usually are the first letter of the school's name. Universities starting with the letter "M" usually would use the letter "M" for their lettermen's clubs. Here are examples:

Ole Miss [The University of Mississippi] "M" Club:

    University of Maryland "M" Club:

    University of Maine "M" Club:

    Marquette University "M" Club: http://www.gomarquette.com/sports/blue-gold/spec-rel/061110aal.html

University of Michigan "M" Club: http://www.letterwinnersmclub.com/

I will say that the University of Maryland's "M" Club is a good candidate for this ring because the University's colors are red, black, gold and white. This ring does have red, black and gold.

Ole Miss colors: crimson & blue
    Marquette University: blue & gold
Univ. of Michigan: azure (F-H: navy) blue & maize

A few other possible universities with "M" Clubs:
Univ. of Maine: blue, sky blue & white
University of Miami: orange & green
University of Massachusetts at Amherst: maroon & white
University of Minnesota: maroon & gold
Michigan State University: green & white
Memphis State University: blue & gray
    Southern Mississippi: black & gold
University of Montana: maroon & silver
Miami of Ohio: red & white
Marshall University: Kelly green & white
University of Missouri: gold & black

I'm seeing a lot of older high school rings in this manner...but no collage rings.

They all seem to be round...

Thanks, Komokwa & Susan, for your research!!..I believe it is a college & not a high school ring..Most universities had lettermen`s clubs....The close ones are Maryland & Mississippi State.

AF..I found this ring in a scrap box....I hope it means more than that to someone out there.....Thanks,again.

    >The close ones are Maryland & Mississippi State.<

Oops-a.gif Ooops, here I am in Mississippi and forgot about Miss State. Probably a Feudian slip for I'm an Ole Miss alumna. The Bulldogs, that cowbell ringing school Miss State, are our arch rivals.

BTW, are there any initial inside the ring? I found Maryland's 1946 yearbook online. If there were initials, you might actually ID the original owner. Another BTW, coach Paul "Bear" Bryant was the head football coach at Maryland in 1946. This was the first year of him being a head coach anywhere. He is pictured in the yearbook.

Schrecongost middle name was Robert per his obituary of 2/9/2013

:hilarious: .... Freudian slip was as good an excuse as I could come up with and not have the post deleted because of language! It verges a little on the rivalry between Michigan and Michigan State. It all has to do with state bragging rights.

    > I saw the movie "Blindside"<

We saw Michael Oher play a couple of times. Oher's football coach in high school, Briarcrest Christian School, is now head football coach at Ole Miss - Hugh Freeze.

Hello - I was looking through this post. John Schrecongost was my grandfather, and did play for Bear Bryant in 1945. Do you have more pictures? My grandmother is still alive, and may know more about the ring (if it was his).

    Welcome to the forum, Pat!

As this is a dated/old thread from August 2015, Sperls, the OP / Original Poster, who had the ring may not see your very interesting reply. You might contact him via the "Conversation" option on this site. At the top right of the page you will see your name, "Inbox", and "Alerts." Clicking or running your cursor over "Inbox" you will see "Conversation." Select "Start new conversation." Type in "SPERLS" in the "participants" field, give it a title like "1946 M-Club University Ring," write a question like your message here, and click the "Start New Conversation" button at the bottom.

It would be wonderful if this proved to be Grandfather's ring and that Sperls hasn't sold it yet!
