19th Century Regency writing desk

    I have a Regency writing desk from the UK, I think circa 1855, similar to this photo. I would like to find out the purpose of the trim/moulding that runs along the top of the back and sides of the desk. I have seen it referred to as a "gallery back and sides" but I have no idea what its original purpose was and would like to find out, if anybody knows. Thanks!

    @ElleBelle - I'm sure folks here would rather view the desk you have instead of "a similiar to" photo.

    Oh, and if it's 1855, it isn't Regency.

    As noted above, an 1855 desk would be considered Victorian era (1837-1901,) not Regency.
