    Oh great to see this thread pulled up again! I'd missed the later examples.
    Charlie, if no one has mentioned it: the charcoal technique was done with thick vine charcoal laid on its side and pulled. Someone was very good at this with steady hands. It's a quick and easy method of charcoal and can provide excellent chiaroscuro, which provides the strong light and dark of how the art is made.
