A little help with a few dolls

Discussion in 'Antique Discussion' started by Phillip LaJoie, Oct 6, 2021.

  1. Hi all, I have had these dolls for some time in various places around the house but have no clue as to their origin or if they are in fact interesting pieces outside of simply my interest in them. Any help in identifying them would be greatly appreciated. The below link is to the dropbox folder I have pictures in (the site said my pictures were too large to post)

    Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

    To help you get going, as many won't go to off site links, here is some help to post here:

    For Future reference, when posting images:

    Try emailing them to yourself as "medium" size, they should then be under 1 MB! That MIGHT solve it quickly and easily!! Good Luck!!

    Each image MUST be UNDER 1 MB....
    There are instructions on site here on how to reduce the size of your image, if that is the problem......you are allowed up to 8 images per post!!! Here are some links to the instructions:

    If on the computer:

    If on an iPhone:

    And if on an Android phone:

    @pearlsnblume....TY.

    @Aquitaine.......good info for OP.

    I really can't help here.

    Pictures are small without detail. Nothing looks antique to me.

    I think @Any Jewelry might be of some help. I've already forgotten what the photos look like, but I think there is a puppet or two that she knows about.

    The very first photo is quite a puzzle.

    I think one of the photos....maybe the 2nd one, could be Russian.

    Yes, it is the 2nd photo that I believe could be Russian.

    Welcome Philip to Antiquers............you do need to embed the photos for easy viewing.

    I think the frog is Indonesian.

    The first one makes me uneasy. Doesn't she have a monkey face?

    It is a bit unsettling but I suppose there is a doll for all tastes. My first impression was too much filler at the plastic surgeon.

    Maybe the first one is Lord Hanuman?

    The African dolls appear to be Masai.

    She is a European lady, of sorts.;) She creeps me out too, but she is well made.

    The pretty one with the fur hat looks Russian, as @judy said.

    The one with the crown is a Burmese marionette puppet.

    The ones in red are indeed Maasai, as @Debora suggested.

    The frog puppet is Indonesian, as @say_it_slowly said. It is a Wayang Golek puppet. Wayang is religiously themed theatre, there are different versions, often related to different regions. Wayang Golek is originally Sundanese from West Java, but these puppets are now made as souvenirs in other parts of Java too.

    I don't know if a frog character is traditional in Sundanese Wayang Golek theatre, it is slightly different from classic Wayang. We have a Wayang Golek puppet collector on the forum, but I can't remember his name.

    All of them are good quality dolls and puppets.

    Does the monkey doll have a monkey body underneath the clothes?

    No, the lower body of all Wayang puppets is just a short bit of wood with 'hips' to make sure the sarung doesn't slide off.;) I'll see if I can find a photo of a 'naked' one.:eek:

    But at least now we all know what a naked Wayang Golek puppet looks like.:playful:
