    There was a Paul Moore & Co out of Birmingham making hinges in the mid-1800s

    I wonder if it is rosewood?

    Seems to me it doesn't matter whether it is made from walnut, coromandel or rosewood, you've got something worth having.

    The darker bands on another box in my pics are made from rosewood, it does not has these tiger like patterns, and would be brighter in tone overall

    Yes agree, but feel lucky as I always want a coromandel box!

    Love the box.:happy: My vote goes to rosewood.
    My coromandel carvings have more straight, parallel lines. There are other tropical hardwoods that look similar to coromandel, it can be difficult to tell them apart.
    @verybrad ?:)

    I think coromandel is right. There are some other exotic woods such as zebrawood that look similar but, given that this is an antique box, coromandel is most likely.

    Another vote for coromandel. You’ve got a treasure!!

    Yes you can see the front panel (and two side panels not photographed here) has more parallel line patterns, depending on where the veneer was cut from?
