This is a 13" string of coral beads, both white and red and some green turquoise beads. I think they were probably sold as beading supplies because there's no clasp and it's not a finished necklace. How can I tell if they are real coral? They are dirty and I'd like to wash them. Will it harm them to soak them in Dawn? Thanks!

They look like real coral, these necklaces were fashionable at one time.
Don't soak them, just wash them between your hands. Use a mild handsoap or shampoo.

I used to do beadwork and have many strings of beads left over. I'd take them apart and make new necklaces or earrings. I have a string of coral like that. I don't wear it because it scratches my neck. I also have strings of those beads made of white coral, stones and shells. Any natural thing like coral or shell are best if just rinsed in plain water and, as AJ said, maybe some mild handsoap.
