Shine a light through the bottom of the stone to see what it looks like from the top.

    Ditto for carnelian.
It could be from the Middle East or Central Asia. Carnelian is an important stone in Islam, and their rings (and stones) are often engraved with animals, sometimes birds too.
The most sought after carnelian for Muslims is from Yemen, and this could be a Yemeni carnelian, with that dark reddish look.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Sounds like the ring is a keeper. There is something very attractive about it.
