I found this while out thrifting near Palm Springs. It measures about 5" wide, about 5.75" tall, and 7.5" long. It weighs 1.8 lbs. It appears to be entirely handmade out of black clay (there is an old chip on the rim). It has an amber, green and white sancai glaze that shows sharp crackling and hazing, and cobalt eyes. The head looks nothing like a duck, the ears are not broken pieces, they're just ears. The bottom is smooth and chalky to the touch. When touched, it has an especially resonant sound. There is a brownish red export stamp. Please help me find age and origin. Thanks! IMG_9367 copy.jpg IMG_9371.JPG IMG_9373.JPG IMG_9372.JPG IMG_9376.JPG

Jianding Export Approval Seal: This type of wax seal is a Jianding (鉴定) or certified export approval seal commonly applied to Chinese art, antiques, and porcelain items inspected and cleared for export by official cultural bureaus (such as the Shanghai or Beijing Cultural Relics Bureau) during the mid-to-late 20th century (often seen from the 1950s through the 1970s/1980s).

Given the seal, it is presumably from China. But the clay body of genuine Tang Dynasty pottery is a white or cream colored earthenware, not dark as in your piece.

Ditto. The Tang geese I found were also more detailed. Like this one:

(Scroll down the page a bit.)

The Chinese have copied pieces from earlier period for centuries, it is part of their appreciation of history.
Here is a later one with less detail than the Tang geese, said to be Kangxi:

Less detail than the Tang pieces, but still more than on your goose, and made of white clay.

Yours was approved for export, which means the authorities didn't think it historically important. But it also wasn't a modern mass produced piece, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered with the seal.
Maybe yours is late Qing, which is antique, just not Tang and not important for them to keep it. Late Qing is just a guess though.
