Just found this box at a sale over the weekend,it needs work, but was cheeep.Typical inlaid brass box-5" by 7" by 10". The interior was 're-upholstered' prob in the 60's or 70's (thick metallic wrapping paper). Thats all I can tell you about it.
PS-There was a 10K Sorority pin and 2 silver Mercedes Benz stickpins inside.
Thanks for all and any info !
    PSS-Sorry Raver,no Anglo Indian this weekend !

Nevertheless, very nice. Love the veneer and the floral brass inlays.

Oh, looks like a stylized "46." "Jan. 46" an odd date as one pledges in the Fall. Agree re the rest of her jewelry.

With your eye Mirana that says a lot.I got another one at the same sale, bit more primitive but looks old as the hills, but then we get so little in the way of Mid to early 19th century, what do I know ?
    PS-Will post that later today.

I was going to say Rosewood but I think it maybe walnut with burls going round the lid, vanity box or sewing box c 1860, English, nice brass and ebony. That would come up a treat :)

We do see quite a few!

    I’d think walnut, too.

I look forward to seeing them. I'm 2 weeks into the hardest restoration I've ever undertaken.

Mid I would say. And @808 raver was right the first time: rosewood, or at least rosewood veneer. I’d opine 1850s-60s. Beautiful!

*postscript* on further examination I think it’s maybe a bit later after all. Ebonized highlights were more common around the 1870s and especially the 1880s, even as rosewood became less common.
