Featured Amber necklace questions

    Found in a thrift shop for $8, 14k GF lobster claw clasp. 26", graduated faceted beads. Strung on double thread. Lumii_20230617_161611076.jpg

    1. Would these be cognac or honey amber or a mix of the two?
    2. Do you see Baltic amber?
    3. There is some crazing- how does it affect value?
    4. Age of piece? I don't know if the lobster claw was added later. Would crazing help identify the age?

    I don't know...researched amber crazing. Could be from humidity and ultraviolet rays...

    I suggests they're been around a while. Vintage amber does that.

    I dont know that much about amber. I do have some bakelite necklaces that are cut with these same facets. I would say '30s or something in that area would have been a popular time for this style. The clasp looks like its a replacement.
    Its a georgeous necklace!

    The clasp could be original, they are still making faceted amber necklaces. These are facet cut, not molded, so excellent.:)
    Cognac going on to a reddish tone.
    Very likely.
    Heat will do that as well. Regular tlc by wiping them with olive oil will help to keep moisture out of those very fine cracks. If moisture gets in, it could lead to further cracking. Just put a drop of olive oil on your fingers, and 'massage' the beads.
    I use rice bran oil, as I mentioned in the thread House linked, but the Polish amber institute advises olive oil.

    Wow, thank you for all the good information. I do think it's older, too, with replaced findings. The thread looks older.... Looking at the wax link, does anyone know how to use it properly?

    I researched amber colors. I didn't know there was black amber! So looks like two shades of cognac.

    I am also thinking hand cut, not pressed, due to the size/shape variations.
