This lion & knight and dragon head crest can be seen on the El Tovar sign hanging over the entrance of the hotel.Fred Harvey, famous for his eating houses along the Santa Fe Railroad route & on the ATSF Santa Fe dining cars (and of course the Harvey Girls), used this El Tovar crest china pattern in the dining rooms at the El Tovar Hotel's restaurant on the rim of the Grand Canyon in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.Built & owned by the Santa Fe Railroad at a cost of $250,000 with local stone by Hopi Indian craftsmen, the hotel opened in 1905 & rooms are furnished in the Mission Style. Fred Harvey, with his ties to Santa Fe dining operations, was the obvious choice for Santa Fe to manage the Hotel.This rarely seen pattern features a wide black band surrounded by gold pinstripes with the center El Tovar crest.Plate is in good condition with moderate use marks. No chips, cracks or crazing. Some pinstripe wear mainly to the outer gold pinstripe. Shiny glaze surface.
