    Hello

I have another painting with a signature I'm not quite sure on. Looks like Roggi?

    Thanks

I note the signatures on these 2 paintings are different in significant ways. The one under consideration here is very different again & the reply at the link INH gave us mentions that signatures are not the same on those two. Looks to me like attributions to Giuseppe & Lucius are speculative & based mainly on wishful thinking. These two, with first initial E, are more reasonably assigned to Egisto. The bit of bio given for Egisto here makes him sound like someone with a sense of humor.

Makes me wonder if these paintings aren't like Nancy Drew books: different authors; same name used for all.

I agree, I got all twisted over more Ebay monks attributed to Lucius. And I don’t think it’s Guisseppi either. So I take my hat out of the ring on this one.
Askart has known artist here if you want to check, Ratsy.

Bronwen the picture on the right of the old lady in the ebay link is the exact same signature as Ratsy Brown has. How are they different they look the exact same and same style of work?

Signatures might have a little difference but the style of art work between the two is the exact same style.

Goodness that's a lot of artwork to look through. With the information you have all given me I found d a couple more examples of the same scene. With Rossi being a common name maybe lots of artists copied an original work?

The signatures are really difficult to match, I will keep on looking.

Drunken monks seem to be a genre like dogs playing poker. A search for 'painting drunken monks' turned up many variants, including another artist who made them a specialty & a company that will have someone paint one just for you, from their available designs or one you provide.

My best guess at this point is that Egisto was the author of the original, that it was commercially successful enough for there to have been a demand for copies & that there were journeyman painters willing to supply them who had enough honor to put the correct name without attempting to forge it. It is more significant that the 'signatures' are all different than that the paintings look so much alike.

We forget that full color printing hasn't been around all that long. If you wanted a faithful copy of a painting, you had a painter do another.

    Hello,
I have stumbled across this old thread after buying a 'Rossi' painting of a boy smoking a cigarette. I have round a pretty much identical painting here:

    https://www.liveauctioneers.com/en-gb/item/4575404_244a-rossi-oil-painting-of-boy-smoking

I have found many identical/similar paintings.... like the above, it seems to be a popular painting to copy:

    1)

    2)

    https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/...0059/lot-513d1f4d-953f-41d5-af82-a5df010c33aa

    but there are many more....

I have seen many paintings being sold as Giuseppe Rossi which are Signed 'ROSSI':

    this being one:
    https://www.chairish.com/product/1346062/giuseppe-rossi-edler-or-peasant-oil-paintings-a-pair

But I have also seen paintings signed G ROSSI

Does anyone know what Giuseppe Rossi's signature looks like - did it change and did he drop the 'G'.

Also, is there an original 'famous' painting of this smoking boy, which has generated these copies? who did it first?

    Many thanks

    Marc

I, too, have mysterious Rossi paintings of old people with drunken-Illuminati-fart faces. My understanding is that whoever the master was- he had dozens of padawans painting in his style and signing his name in order to “make bank bro”... to use the parlance of our time; kind of like Warhol or Banksy. Anyway, I’m attaching pictures of the fronts and backs of mine, hopefully these clues will help and someone who knows more will chime in. These paintings have been chilling in Cincinnati for 40+ years if that means anything. https://postimg.cc/gallery/3xZNmxg
