Why do you think it's acrylic? Can you post of a photograph of the back?

Great question! I assumed this was oil since I thought acrylics were first used in the 40's. This is the description used by the auction house as suggested by their resident "art expert". I have requested a photo of the back

If it really is acrylic, why do they call it antique? (You're right on the 1940's.)

We are finding more real estate companies getting into the estate auction business here and you really need to underwrite the auction house or be willing to assume risk.

Regardless, I really like the piece and was hoping to decipher the signature in the hopes of making a more informed decision

Sorry, I can't help with the signature. Are you bidding to resell or to keep? I like it.

Maybe it is easier to find a list of (landscape)painters for Sarreguemines and see if any name matches the signature?

Acrylic, my eye. Given what looks like the age, vanishingly unlikely. It's not a good medium for painting on porcelain or china, it peels. Can you feel any brush strokes on the surface? Factory piece could be enamel or even printed, hobbyist oils.

I think that's an acute accent, rather than a dot on an i. Menaro? Mendro?
