Is that little rectangular shape on the underside left over glue from a tiny label?

Yes but I don’t know what was written on it.

The label residue resembles "JAPAN" in white letters with blue background sticker, but we cannot assume such. Did it have felt glued onto the bottom edge at any point?

. Check if something’s written under it.

Maybe from Japan, they’re fond of goldfish and other ceramic goldfish thingies from there are known. But I’m totally out of my element here.

You know what I’m pretty positive it had said Japan on it. I was washing it the other day and it was curled up so I just tore it off

Don't beat yourself up. It's definitely not antique, and you know it was made in Japan. That's about as much as you can find out from a generic Japan sticker.

    Hi,
For some reason it reminds me of the plaster goldfish found in 1950s bathrooms.

Me too Greg. That has the pink and black colors that were all the rage in the 60's.
We had a bathroom that had those colors I think.
When I go to estate sales, and I walk into the old bathrooms to see what is what, I go back in time when I see those colors. Also the green and black bathrooms that were never remodeled. I blinked and all the years flew by.
I bet that would sell depending on condition.
