Hi, thanks for the info. In your opinion is this something I should restore or is it worth getting a professional? Thanks :)

I don't know your restoration skills, Lee, so I don't know what to tell you. I would get estimates from at least a couple of antique restoration folks in your area and see what's what. At least you know that your "purchase price" was good!

Yes, it would be hard to fit a table like that in the small room, though it would be handy to rest your copy of the Sun on, I guess. :wacky::eek::D

    Ummmm

I'm sorry, but I am going to disagree with the others.
I think the base is old, but the top has been replaced.

If you know how to refinish furniture, I say go for it. If you have never refinished anything before, and you are keeping it, then worth paying someone to do it for you.

Not English oak. I'd think elm. I don't think it would take that much work to make it look pretty decent. A good brush down, then perhaps even a clean with a wood wash. Wipe it over with white spirit, coat of wax. Job done.

Thanks everyone for your information and advice. I’ll get a couple of quotes and see what they say.
I’m assuming it’s not worth much, so not worth spending a fortune on?

Not worth spending a fortune on, but worth spending enough to get a great result.

An antique furniture dealer friend of mine saw the pictures.
He said it is a Loo Table, looking at the base he says French and the top is a marriage.
Not a great deal of value in it.

If poster wants to keep the table for personal use, you would do well to hire a professional refinisher. Some woods like pine, cherry, birch, maple, etc are notoriously difficult to stain/color because the grain of the wood is unevenly dense, the color penetrates the porus earlywood but can't penetrate the dense latewood, resulting in a dark/light splotchy effect which is not very attractive.
