    Hi,
I'm a little unsure about this plate. Obviously old, with stilt marks on the underside and topside. I thought maybe spongeware or Port Neuf, but the stencil-like decoration seems rather simple for that. The rooster motif seems typical of French pottery. Is this some type of faience? Does anyone have any ideas? Rooster-Plate-Antiquers.jpg

Could we see a photo of the back? Are there any marks on the back?

    Hi Peggy,
Here's a photo of the back - there are no maker's marks, only the stilt marks Antique-Rooster-Plate-Underside.jpg

I find the wire hanger fascinating!

About the plate... the rooster and border design do look stenciled (as you suggest) rather than freehand painted. The decorator didn't get the join of the border design done very neatly.
What all that means is beyond me, this is not an area I know much about.
