If the sword indeed bears Masonic symbols, I'd think that would indicate it was not an official US military sword, or at least that further research was needed. One thing about experts is that they are not necessarily familiar with items outside their field, and their field may be quite limited. That is, an expert on US military swords might, or might not, have any knowledge of fraternal swords, just as there may be experts on fraternal swords who are rather unfamiliar with actual military items.
There have been so many fraternal swords made, sometimes based on military ones, that I'd be looking for second and even third or fourth opinions.
This does look like quite a nice sword, but my experience has been that fraternal swords are worth considerably less than military ones; or conversely, that military swords are worth quite a bit more than fraternal.
It would certainly be worth doing the research to verify which this is.

If you want to, you can search google books for Masonic members. They kept detailed information on every meeting.
You would need to search by the name and city, state where they lived. From that you can get the lodge # and possibly get the book of minutes of a meeting including those in attendance. Maybe someone knows an easier way, but that has worked for me.

Just to be clear......when I said not authentic......I meant not authentic to a M 1841 Naval officers sword.,..... but it may be a presentation sword...

I just came across your post. Your sword is in fact a M1841 Naval Officer's sword that appears to have the front and back folding guards removed. Can you see where they may have been attached, pins present? Maybe a special order with a brass scabbard vice the normal leather one. I am a Navy collector, any chance this may be for sale?
