I have a hand-carved eagle which I purchased when I first came to Canada. I hope someone can identify the artist as it is an extremely beautiful carving. It measures 5.1/2" tall by 1.1/4" in diameter.

Hi flipper, the first link was to my wifes CW page. But as usual you have come up with a link and I feel that the carving is so similar to the carving of my eagle that it may not be North American tribal art. The antler may infact have been scorced in NA then carved in Indonesia. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, now I will do some more research.:happy:

I'm not an antler expert, but have seen some....and the antler here doesn't look like what I'd expect for North American, especially if one were thinking NW US or Canada....but I could be wrong.

Hi all_fakes, I do believe the lower part of a whitetail deer is quiet knobbly like the bottom of the carving.

Could be. The color however looks a lot like imported Sambar Stag that I've used for knife-making; from India and SE Asia.

I don't have any issue with the antler material, but the many NA eagles I have seen were better observed & more accurately rendered when it came to the feathers. This one looks crossed with a lizard.

The color was probably stained with potassium permanganate which knife makers have used for many years.

I don't see any indication that it is Native-made.
