Even if it's "ugly 80s" gold melts just fine! (LOL) In fact, large and ugly is even better! Bring on that ugly 18K, unless you find some 20k set with plastic that would be better off as folding green. Found that a few times and would cheerfully find it again.

Lol you're going to have to explain 20k set in plastic? I'll take it in any form it comes in! 10k, 24k. It's all good to me and it's all gold to me.

20k set with plastic, not in plastic :)

Honestly this wording has me just as confused. :) I’m sure once you shed light it will be obvious but please do.

I am picturing a 20kt ring set with a plastic cabachon that imitates high chromium translucent green jade. Am I close?

I think she is talking about finding a 24K piece in a jar or bag lot filled with what appears to be junk plastic beads.

  7. Found two incredible rings that I rescued. One was an early 19s Beautiful edwardian filigree platinum setting with two beautiful diamonds, 3 sapphires and 11 diamonds located throughout the setting. I had it appraised for $1,400 more than I paid for it. He had no idea what he had. An incredible and unique ring.

Then I rescued an unusual 30s-40s midcentury diamond ring in 14K. Again, I got it for less than $200 and sold it for $700. I look at it as I save a beautiful piece of history from melt.

These guys often price high because they are looking for some wiggle room to negotiate a price. So always make sure you do that.

I've actually found high karat gold wrapped around plastic before (and it was plastic or resin) and high karat set with plastic so... to Marie the answer is yes.(LOL) It's turned up both ways. The piece I originally referred found with the plastic stone was a Buddha pendant with blue plastic. Go figure. It was in a bag of "broken" junk with a busted 10k (so marked) bracelet.

This I’ve done. Well not 24k but gold. Bought a massive like 50-80lb box of “jewelry” donated to a thrift store for $250. Manager was short staffed on people who were qualified to sort all his built up inventory so he sold me a large Rubbermaid bin full. Lots of shit but some gold, bunch of silver, and some good costume. Was fun to sort through. My only regret was not going back and buying more of them before he got fired for doing exactly that. I wasn’t the first he sold them to. At least that’s what I heard from an employee about his firing. I felt bad, he was a nice guy and had a real issue he was solving. Corporate thrift chain though and I guess they didn’t take kindly to it. I used to buy junk jars from thrift stores too. Once I got two vases filled with single and broken earrings. I actually pulled a good amount of AU out of those. One other time bought a junk jar of pins and could see one 14k pin in the bunch before buying. It was the only one but melt for it was more than double what I paid for the whole thing.

If it was one of those no-design circle pins, melting was all it was good for. I've found my fair share of gold single earrings that way too. Never had the good luck to buy the whole freakin' bin yet, but hope springs eternal!

I’ve been waiting to find another singles jar since then. I haven’t even seen a junk jar worth buying in many months. The bin was fun but honestly kind of disappointing. None of the people that donated to the one that I got had good taste or a lot of money it seemed. Nothing older than the 50s either. It could have been an absolute bonanza. I imagine some people probably hit literal gold mines. I should have realized the opportunity wouldn’t last forever! I’m still trying to get rid of a lot of the crummy costume stuff though lol.

Edit: I see a lot of the no design circle pins. Not sure whose buying those. Some people really like circles I guess.

They made a TON of them in the 50s/60s and everyone who had a jacket or dress had one of those pins.
