Featured Anyone know of a good site to research 19th & 20th century childrens books?

I had a book as a child that was still around when my kids were little and now is long gone. My daughter asked if I could find it. There are a lot of websites, but they mostly have the same 10 or 20 classic books. This one was unusual. I'm sure it was English and about a little boy whose toys came to life and they had adventures and at the end, the pull-toy beetle was toasting a cheese sandwich on its feelers over the fire in the grate.

abebooks.com used to have a forum for people hoping to identify books from a long ago memory. I'll go see if it's still there for you. Back in a minute.

    Maybe Quill & Brush.
I know there is a specialist somewhere, maybe San Diego.
See if you can look at issues of‘’Firsts’ on line.
    They advertised in there.

I have hundreds of children’s books but no catalog to figure out what I have and where. :(
    Has that book seems familiar.
    -
Is it in black and white or color or mixed?
    -
Any site should have a request option.

Hope you find it!! I spent HOURS going thru eBay's list of Christmas books (over a thousand!), looking for one I had as a child. Couldn't remember the title, the author, or what it looked like. But I knew I'd recognize it instantly.
On the very last page -- there it was!

    I bought it.

The next day, I had a note from Paypal telling me that the Seller had cancelled.

KOT: well, the rest of the story is, that, there was another one on eBay, right there at the end, for $50-something! A tad over my price range.

By this time, I was so mad, it's a good thing the Seller was not in the vicinity! What to do... Amazon!

And they had one; more than I wanted to pay, but NOT $50. :)

Original Seller emailed that it was a mis-list... (Humpf!)

Think I'd be ready to kill. But at least you now had the title for future searches? Want to tell us?

She doesn’t want us to find it and buy it for ourselves. ;)
Maybe to buy it and soak her for it. ;)

Or afraid you'll find the only copy around & want it for yourself. There's a General Discussion thread: Books you loved as a child & would like to find again.

I found mine year's ago. Songberd's Grove by Anne Barrett and The Spanish Cave by Geoffrey Household. Funny what captures one's imagination as a child and never quite let's go.

My book is called, "Merry Christmas," and it is illustrated by Natasha Simkbovitch. (Yep, that 'b' belongs in there!) Came out in 1943. When you see the cover, you'll know why I knew it immediately.

I got two copies of another book, one for each set of grandchildren, titled. "Myths and Enchantment, Tales for Young Children." This one has been re-issued, and though the cover is different, the drawings and paintings inside are just as I remember them!

So Bev, did you find yours? I have been inputting all kinds of clues based on your description; so far, -- nada.
