I spent my Saturday morning last weekend at a flea market not unlike the one mentioned in the article. Previously I hadn't been to a flea market for perhaps ten years but this trip reinvigorated my interest in them. There was an absolute ton of junk and 90% of the stuff in the indoors portion of the market didn't interest me in the slightest but outside on the asphalt lined with tables and literal piles of stuff my treasure hunting mentality kicked in and I found a few cool vintage items. Will have to go back on future weekends and explore some more as I'm sure there was lots of stuff I missed. With the past decade's collapse of brick and mortar shopping and shopping malls I believe that flea markets and their ilk will become increasingly important to the American landscape. These are not just venues to sell vintage knickknacks, bootleg DVDs, pallets of surplus merchandise or Amazon returns but the flea market is an important business incubator of sorts allowing small enterprises to get started and develop into something more. Perhaps the person considering opening a more permanent brick and mortar store utilizes the flea market to figure out what works and what doesn't in an low risk environment. Your Thoughts?
