Featured Badly damaged but interesting Oriental Square bottle

    say_it_slowly yes, it is a pity that they do not show the bases. Age was not mentioned, but I think it should be 18th c, all comparable examples are dated this way. I continued my search too, and found this one, Kiyomizu ware from Kyoto, 18th c, which comes even closer to rhiwfield's bottle with it's intense cobalt blue: http://www.mfa.org/collections/object/wine-bottle-24096

    One last remark, the description of the Boston piece may be wrong, the shape and decoration are so similar to the other examples that it may be Satsuma, too. There are often mistakes in descriptions in museums, so it is very well possible...

    That's an interesting suggestion . . . do these museums really do that for the public? Do they charge a consulting fee (it seems everything must be "monetised" these days)?

    Silver, I do not know for all museums, but the VAM has a "free opinion service", you can bring them the piece you want to ask about or send them an email. http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/o/opinions-service/
