This sofa has been in our family since at least the early 1900's. Our re-upholsterer told us that it's probably worth over $10,000. We don't know where it actually was made or how much it's worth. It MIGHT have been purchased in St. Louis, MO, as our grandparents lived in southwest Missouri. We would appreciate your thoughts about the sofa.

    Welcome Dan.
Amazing craftsmanship. The furniture people will know more about it, they'll be along later.

Might get more eyes in the furniture thread than here. Renaissance revival walnut circa 1875. Not much interest in such these days so only worth 10K in wildest dreams. Most sell for a few hundred if they sell at all. If it could be attributed to John Jelliff, it could be worth a bit more. While the upholstery job appears competent, it is not in the style that fits this sofa.

Here are some Jelliff (or Jelliff style ) sofas that sold for comparison.

You will see that a lot of these auction lots were passed. This means that there just was not enough interest in the piece to sell it or that it did not meet a reserve to sell. This furniture is just not in demand right now so it is great that you plan to keep this in the family. It is a beautiful and historical piece of furniture that deserves to be appreciated.

Did John Jelliff leave any identifying marks or "sign" his works in any particular way?
