Newer than expected; as you said, probably the work of a younger artist.
Zero provenance, his wife picked it up locally maybe 15 years ago.

Ya........I had my suspicions about a much newer mask.......... but there's the rub....you can't always date a mask from the look of the carving....... it's the back that tells that story !!!!
